At Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, the Horned Frogs’ harassing defense stifled the Utah Utes in the 2-0 shutout.

The Frogs’ defense, which has only allowed 11 goals this season, limited the Utes to 3 total shots on goal thanks to tireless efforts from defenders Alex Mechalske and Katie Taylor, who frustrated the taller Utah forwards.

It wasn’t the defense that played well, the defense kept Utah honest also.

The Frogs got off 12 solid shots, many of which came due to penetration from freshman Jordan Calhoun and junior Lizzy Karoly.

The 12 shots kept Utah goalie Hannah Turpen on her toes, as the Frogs’ shots came from multiple angles.

Calhoun scored the Frogs’ first goal, her 13th of the season, in the 59th minute of the match off of an assist from senior Caroline Starns.

“We wanted to focus on staying patient and getting the ball wide and spread out,” Calhoun said.

Her goal was an exact representation of being spread and patient. After Utah goalkeeper Hannah Turpen blocked Starns’ shot from the right side of the field, Calhoun found herself in perfect position to tap the ball into the left corner of the net from the left side. Precise ball movement from midfielders Kaylie Garcia and Michelle Nguyen also aided the solid offensive display.

Head coach Dan Abdalla’s focus was the same as Calhoun’s.

“We wanted to control the tempo and try to get the ball wide,” he said. And the Frogs did just that, bringing their season goal total to 38.

The win improved the Horned Frogs to 11-3-1 on the season, continuing the best start in program history.
