Horned Frog fans have been criticized in the past for a lack of enthusiasm at our football games, but Amon G. Carter Stadium isn’t the only sports complex on campus that sits less-than-full on game days.

Star-Telegram sports columnist Randy Galloway called us out before football season started this year and blatantly asserted that we don’t have “big-time fan support.” That sentiment often applies to other games, matches and meets that the Horned Frogs participate in.

The university has several other highly-ranked sports teams that largely go unnoticed in terms of fan turnout. Our women’s golf team is ranked higher than any other Mountain West Conference team, and our men’s golf and swimming & diving teams both rank second in conference standings.

Daniel Meyer Coliseum was practically empty during the women’s basketball double overtime win against SMU Wednesday night. The team is ranked No. 1 in the MWC and has been consistently ranked in the Top 25 nationally this season. That’s some serious street cred. So, why can’t we get our butts in the seats and cheer them on? The team’s coaching staff and players are hoping to make a splash in the postseason this year, and there is plenty of evidence in support of their potential.

Although football is a major draw for students and fans alike, we should remember to give other teams credit where credit is due.
