Ten Fort Worth kids chosen to perform in national Broadway tour of The Wizard of Oz.

Three male and seven female sixth graders from Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts will play the munchkins Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bass Performance Hall down town Fort Worth.

The ten students auditioned for the role and won the parts only one week ago. Since then the boys and girls have been rehearsing daily to prepare for their Broadway debut.

The traveling company contacted FWAFA requesting ten children to be featured in the show as munchkins. After choir director Victor Johnson held auditions and picked the lucky ten, he began teaching them the music. The choreographers sent the little munchkins a DVD with the choreography to learn the dances while Johnson made sure they were prepared with the music.

FWAFA sophomore Chelsea Branscum has been helping along the sixth graders to make sure their dance moves are stage ready.

After only a week of tough rehearsing, the munchkins have learned all of their songs and choreography. They must come to the Bass Hall for their first dress rehearsal only hours before their first performance, opening night.

Most of the kids are just excited to perform for their first time at Bass Hall. Addyson Nowell, 11, said it has been her dream to perform at Bass Hall since she was a little girl.

Every day the students leave their regular choir class to rehearse in a separate room. They listen to their 15-year-old dance helper with energetic excitement reminiscent of munchkins in the Lollipop Guild.
