The American Chemical Society Chapter at TCU, also known as Chemistry Club, will host scientific events in the upcoming week around campus and workshops at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History to celebrate the American Chemical Society’s National Chemistry Week.

Sandi Dang, president of the Chemistry Club and a junior chemistry and mathematics double major, said the club is scheduled to have a flubber-making workshop and a periodic table of cupcakes next week in celebration of week.

Dang said she wants the events to broaden the horizons of non-science majors.

“I just hope that I can scratch off the surface of people’s interest for chemistry,” she said.

Kayla Green, the Chemistry Club sponsor and assistant professor of chemistry, said the club wanted to do a big event to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry 2011. The club decided to partner with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, which hosts an annual event for the week.

The club is working in conjunction with about 120 volunteers from seven other Dallas-Fort Worth colleges to organize educational, hands-on experiments for local elementary and middle school students at the museum, Green said.

Children will learn how to make ice cream, construct model molecules and see various other scientific demonstrations, Green said. The events at the museum are scheduled to take place Oct. 18-22.

Green said she is the only professor directly connected with organizing the events, but students deserve all of the credit.

“This event at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is more than I could have ever imagined that a group of individuals could have put together, and I’m just so proud of all of our volunteers in the TCU Chemistry Club that have put in so much effort in planning and I just know it’s going to be a really great event,” she said.

Green said ZS Pharma, a local pharmaceutical company, and the American Chemical Society donated funds to help the club buy supplies for the demonstrations.

Dang said she does not know whether to be excited or nervous about the week, but hopes to live out the Chemistry Club’s mission: to share the love of chemistry with the campus, the community and eventually the world.

“I think once it’s all said and done next Saturday I’m going to be super, super happy because I will have been able to share my love of chemistry with everyone else,” Dang said.
