The TCU club hockey team will play SMU for the second straight week Friday night. First puck drops at 8:30 p.m. at the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills.

The Horned Frogs defeated SMU 6-3 in their opening game last Friday.

“It was amazing, it was incredible,” head coach Mike Caressimo said. “It was a great feeling to get our first win of the season with our first game.”

A rivalry was evident early in last Friday’s game.

Junior Brian Rockwell said the team did not know what to expect about how SMU would play, but within the first five minutes it became known to the players that the Mustangs were playing to win.

Caressimo said he told his players to “play smart, and play tough and stay out of the penalty box.”

By the first intermission the Frogs were up 3-1. TCU added a goal in the second period and two in the third in that game. The win marked Caressimo’s first career win at TCU.

Blake Sadau played in the net the whole game, ending with his first collegiate career win.

Rockwell led the team by scoring four goals in the game. Rockwell said scoring the goals was a great experience along with winning the team’s first game.

Tommy Buffano and Jon Helton each scored a goal and added an assist. Teammates Tyler Walker and Michael Authier also had one assist apiece.

The Metroplex matchup comes at a down time for the sport on a national level.

The National Hockey League, which has locked out its players, announced Wednesday that preseason games would be canceled through Sept. 30. Training camps for the NHL were scheduled to begin this weekend. The Dallas Stars canceled their training camp in Boise, Idaho. The Stars would have taken on the Minnesota Wild in their first game in Boise.

“[The lockout] stinks,” Caressimo said. “Hockey is a great sport and I look forward to it every year.”
