The TCU football team beat Virginia 27-7 Saturday afternoon at Amon G. Carter Stadium. For the Horned Frogs (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12), Saturday’s win marked their 11th in a row, the longest streak in the nation.
Here are a few quick highlights from the game:
Carter with another big game. Sophomore receiver Brandon Carter made two one-handed catches in the first half, the first being a 68-yard touchdown with 8:17 left in the first quarter. That catch came on third down and gave TCU a 7-0 lead. His second acrobatic grab was a 43-yard catch and run down to the UVA 3-yard-line in the second quarter.
Carter, who last week against Kansas had eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown, finished Saturday’s game with five catches and 128 yards.
Bending, not breaking. Late in the third quarter, the Cavs nearly scored when Rocco found Darius Jennings across the middle right at the goal line on third and six from the TCU 12. But Rocco’s pass was broken up when safety Chris Hackett hit Jennings, jarring the ball loose. UVA went for it on fourth down, but Stansly Maponga got to Rocco, forcing an errant throw.
The Cavaliers’ touchdown in the fourth quarter was the first given up by TCU this season.
Pachall throws first interception. Quarterback Casey Pachall threw his first interception of the season in the second quarter of Saturday’s game. The Frogs were facing a third down and goal from the 8 when Pachall’s pass was picked off. Still, the junior finished the game 21-of-32 passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns.
Red zone problems continue. Last week, TCU had four turnovers in or near the red zone. The Frogs haven’t necessarily got those out of their system just yet. Pachall’s interception came inside the 10-yard-line, and in the fourth quarter receiver Skye Dawson fumbled as he was nearing the end zone, leading to a touchback.
Cain has big day. Linebacker Kenny Cain had two interceptions Saturday, the last of which he returned 41 yards to the Virginia 31-yard-line, which set TCU up for a field goal. Cain also had a fumble recovery and four tackles. Elisha Olabode, who forced the fumble Cain recovered, led the team with eight tackles.
Oberkrom solid. Freshman kicker Jaden Oberkrom was perfect Saturday, making all three extra point attempts and two field goals, one from 46 yards, the other from 47.
Brown grabs first touchdown. Redshirt freshman Ladarius Brown scored his first career touchdown, a 17-yard pass from Pachall late in the fourth quarter. Brown finished with two catches for 26 yards.
