The Arlington Sam Houston Texans (2-2) spoiled homecoming Friday for the Paschal Panthers (2-2) with a 35-0 win.
“Our biggest enemy right now is us,” head coach Matt Cook said.
The Panthers made too many mistakes and did not capitalize on opportunities, he said.
The Texans won despite committing 19 penalties for 170 yards.
Paschal fell behind early when the Texans’ sophomore quarterback Erwin Hill scored a touchdown on a 13-yard run.
Early in the second quarter, the Panthers had a 28-yard field goal blocked. Hill then scored another touchdown on a 29-yard run for the Texans, which made the score 14-0.
Hill rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries
Junior David Mustapha then intercepted a pass from the Panthers’ sophomore quarterback William Floyd on the very next play. The Texans’ kicker, senior Miguel Alvarez, missed a 30-yard field goal on the ensuing drive.
Floyd completed 10 passes out of 30 attempts for 56 yards and three interceptions.
Cook said Paschal passed more than he wanted because the team got behind early.
The score remained 14-0 Texans at halftime.
Houston then scored on its first possession of the second half with a 3-yard touchdown run from senior running back Andrew Alvarado.
Junior running back Darrell James suffered an unknown injury in the third quarter, Cook said. That injury left the Panthers with their third-team running back, junior Shang Bou, as their only reliable option, Cook said.
The Panthers’ last hope came up short when Mustapha intercepted another Floyd pass, this one in the end zone.
Paschal had 91 yards of total offense with 19 yards coming in the second half.
The Texans then scored their final touchdown of the night, an 11-yard run from senior running back Trae Swift. That score gave Houston a 28-0 lead.
Floyd threw another interception to Mustapha late in the fourth quarter, which was returned 18 yards for a touchdown.
The Panthers will try to even up its record in district play on Thursday against Arlington Bowie at Wilemon Field.
