The TCU women’s soccer team lost their first two conference games over the weekend, falling 2-1 against West Virginia on Friday, and 3-2 in a double-overtime game against Kansas on Sunday.  

The Jayhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Sunday. Just 17 seconds into the second half, Kansas forward Ashley Williams pushed their lead to 2-0. The Frogs cut the lead down to one as freshman forward Lindsy Schafer scored her first career goal assisted by senior mid-fielder Monica Alvarado.

With 13 seconds left in regulation the Frogs were able to connect again, giving freshman defender Serena Smith-Banas her first goal as well, sending the game into overtime.

The teams stayed knotted at two goals through the first overtime peroid. But after the two-minute intermission, Jayhawk forward Caroline Kastor was able to score the game-winning goal in the second extra frame.

Head coach Eric Bell said he was proud of how the Frogs fought to get back in the game. “We gave ourselves a chance,” he said. The Frogs’ comeback, although ending in a loss, instilled the team with confidence, Bell said.

Schafer said she was impressed the team closed the 2-0 deficit, but in the future she said she wants to be the team that’s on top. She said the team is going to try its best to be prepared both physically and mentally to face their next opponent, the Iowa State University Cyclones.

Carly Bowen, freshman mid-fielder, said the Frogs’ efforts against the Jayhawks showed that the team is resilient. “We’re here to win, not just for the ride,” she said.

The Frogs will head north to Ames for their match with Iowa State, but the Frogs need a win, Bell said. He said the Frogs are going to keep their game plan intact as they move into the match. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
