The TCU swim team added a new meet to its schedule – a match against UT-Permian Basin will now be the team's first meet of the season.

Head swimming and diving coach Richard Sybesma said he wanted to open with an off-campus meet to see where the team stands in the beginning of the season.

“[The meet] will be a short training experience, a team bonding experience and a meet to watch the swimmers race against a very good Division II team,” Sybesma said. “It’ll be a fun atmosphere and a racing atmosphere.”

Senior Devin Price said the meet would give the freshman swimmers a chance to showcase their skills for the first time, as well as give an indication of how well the Frogs will perform this season.

The criminal justice major said he advised the freshmen to race hard and push through at the end, even if it hurts.

Each week the swimmers have worked on conditioning and getting back into shape, Sybesma said.

“[The swimmers] are looking better and better and better,” he said.

Sybesma said he wanted TCU and UTPB needed to meet again, since the last time the two teams went head-to-head was in 2008. Both of TCU's teams, men and women, won the meet.

Price said UTPB having a Division I school on their schedule looks good for their team, and he looks forward to competing against the Falcons again.

Sybesma said the trip was needed because it will help bring the team together. 

“Five hours on a bus will help you get to know each other real well,” Sybesma said.

The Frogs will travel Monday to Andrews, Texas. The meet begins at 3:00 p.m.
