Students looking for something to do on Tuesday nights need look no further than the Commons.
Starting tomorrow, there will be a Texas country music artist playing on the patio of 1873 Café and Sports Grill every Tuesday night as part of the new TCU Texas Music Tuesday Series sponsored by KTCU.
The concerts will be free for students and will occur every Tuesday with the possible exception of the week of Thanksgiving. Plans are already being made for concerts for next semester. The schedule of bands that will be playing can be found at KTCU’s website.
Natalie Ivanovskis, better known by her KTCU DJ moniker Natalie Rhea, said she started the concert series because there wasn’t anything consistent happening on campus during Tuesday nights.
“I wanted to bring something more consistent to the Commons and I figured, why not country music?” the senior film, television and digital media major said.
Ivanovskis runs her own country music show on KTCU, “Texas Choice with Natalie Rhea,” every Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. She used the connections she made while hosting the show to help her get the concert series started. One of those connections was Tami Millspaugh, president of Texas Record Chick Promotions.
“We just wanted the students to know that this music is out there,” Millspaugh said. “They’re getting a chance to become a part of something big because they’re getting to see a lot of these artists either at the beginning of or at pivotal parts of their careers.”
Up-and-coming Texas country artist Kolton Moore certainly fits that bill. Moore and his band, based out of Millsap, Texas, will be the first band to play in the Texas Music Tuesday series. Moore and his band have just started recording their first LP and released an EP entitled Love Me Instead in January.
Moore said he is excited about playing on campus.
“We haven’t played in the TCU area that much so hopefully we get a nice fan base here and we’ll get to come back and play for some more fans.”
The concert series is expected to be a hit, and with good reason: Big-name country artists such as Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band have all played on campus to positive reactions from students.
Students are excited about this concert series as well.
“I think it would be a great addition to TCU, and it would also get people plugged into Texas country," senior movement science major Christiana Kittelson said. "I think it would spur on lots of opportunities for TCU students and the artists.”
As of Monday night, 87 people have said they are attending the concert on the event’s Facebook page.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside to 1873 Café and Sports Grill.
