The TCU V-Day Campaign will be hosting auditions for their spring production of “The Vagina Monologues” this coming Sunday and Monday.

V-day is a global movement to end violence against women, started in 1998 by Eve Ensler and several other women in New York City.  The TCU V-Day Campaign, a member of the V-day movement performs “The Vagina Monologues” once a year to raise campus awareness of violence against women and to raise funds for the global campaign, said TCU V-Day Campaign executive director Mimi Woldeyohannes, a senior political science major.

“The monologues are an essential part to the V-Day campaign,” Woldeyohannes said. “They are one of the largest fundraisers that are distributed to various benefactors.”

“The Vagina Monologues” is a play written by Ensler with various monologues that portray the thoughts and feelings of women including global violence against women, said TCU V-Day Campaign marketer, Winta Wolana, a sophomore nursing major.

Selected monologues will be chosen for the TCU production with 25 to 30 actresses needed. The selected actresses will be trained to understand the complex roles’ emotions they will be portraying, said Wolana.

“It’s not a show that is supposed to be particularly fanciful,” Wolana said. “It’s people investing their own emotions into the play.” 

All women on campus are invited to audition, professors included, said TCU V-Day Campaign public representative Christy Wilson. Wilson, a theatre major, said a variety of cast members will help spread awareness and information about the play. 

“It does not matter if the girls auditioning have theatre experience or not,” Wilson said. “The directors will be looking for girls who are empowering and confident.”

Auditions for “The Vagina Monologues” will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Zeidman Room on the third floor of the Brown-Lupton University Union. The play will be performed Feb. 16 and 17 on campus.
