Alternative acts set for duet

On the heels of their critically-lauded collaborative EP, “In the Reins,” Iron & Wine and Calexico will take Ridglea Theater stage Saturday.Doors open at 8:30 p.m. After both bands play a full set, they will take the stage together to play the EP in its’ entirety.

The EP, which MSNBC.com called, “The best album of the year,” is a collaboration between the Tuscon, Ariz.-based Calexico and Miami-based singer-songwriter Sam Beam, who records under the name Iron & Wine.

Beam garnered media attention last year with his cover of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.” The song was featured in the film “Garden State” and on the now-platinum soundtrack.

Amanda Redmon, Modern Rock Director for KTCU 88.7 FM “The Choice,” said the soundtrack carries strong cultural significance for college students.

“It had a big impact on the indie music scene,” Redmon said. “A lot of college students liked the movie, and it opened the doors to lesser known artists.”

The soundtrack was instrumental in breaking many then-unknown bands into the mainstream, Redmon said.

“A lot of those bands got really big,” Redmon said. “It was a smart move for the artists.”

Junior religion major David Brower agrees that the soundtrack was important in bringing Beam’s hushed folk sounds to a larger audience.

“It fit the motive of the movie,” Brower said. “It’s great music with great musicianship.”

Calexico released its first album, “Spoke,” in 1997. Calexico is also featured in the new documentary “High & Dry,” which chronicles the Tuscon music scene.

Brower said the combination of Iron & Wine and Calexico works well on the record.

“It matches two bands that are different but similar,” Brower said. “Iron & Wine is more of a folk sound, and Calexico is more Southwestern, but they both blend very well.”

Brower said he expects the concert to have a very mellow atmosphere.

“It’s very relaxing and should be a great show.”
