Frogs defeat UNLV in second weekend matchup

The Horned Frogs defeated the UNLV Rebels 4-3 in a spirited performance Saturday evening at the Friedman Tennis Center’s indoor courts. The Frogs swept the Rebels in doubles play, clinching the match when Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink overpowed Brett Hunter and Elliot Wronski 8-6. Coet and Brink are currently ranked No. 36 in the nation as a doubles team.

Although the Rebels had an upset victory Friday over New Mexico, head coach Dave Borelli said the Frogs were not overly worried about today’s match.

“We just have to stay positive and think it will go our way, we focus on our game and don’t worry about the opponent,” said Borelli.

Radu Baru clinched the single’s match for the Frogs, who led 3-2, when he defeated UNLV’s Slavko Bijelica, 5-7, 6-3 and then 7-6.

“I think both teams competed well, but when we believe in ourselves and play with energy, we will do well,” said Baru.

Borelli said he hopes the team has fun with each match, because a positive attitude helps the players perform well. Borelli said an optimistic attitude especially the players cheering on their teammates gives the team an extra advantage in matches.

“This team has really great chemistry and this season we have had such a tough schedule, playing more ranked teams than any other school in the conference, that we can use the chemistry and encouragement from each other to our advantage because it is one of our strongest points,” said Borelli.

The Frogs will close the tournament tomorrow when they host the New Mexico Lobos, who are No. 46 in the nation, at 2 p.m. This match will mark the final home game for the Frogs who will honor Baru and Andrew Ulrich, the two senior’s on the team.

Senior Frog Baru said he is excited to play his final match at TCU on the home court. Baru said he wants to not only play well but win.
