TCU Shooters Qualify for USA Squad

FORTBENNING, GA — Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer, two members of the women’s rifle team, will make their way to the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Munich, Germany as part of the United States squad beginning July 30.

Freshmen Sarah Beard, Sarah Scherer, Caitlin Morissey and senior Erin Lorenzen competed in the final team selection for the World Shooting Championships in Fort Benning, Ga in May.

Scherer will be competing in the air rifle and smallbore 3×20 event. Beard will also be competing in the smallbore 3×20 event as well as the smallbore prone event.

Scherer took home two more national championship titles, including the women’s air rifle national championship and the junior women’s air rifle championship title, with scores of 394 and 398, respectively. In the women’s competition, Scherer fell just .2 of a point shy of a perfect .400 score. She then fired two solid scores of 103.0 in the women’s final and a 103.8 in the junior women’s final.

Morrissey also shot well firing a 395 personal best air rifle score on the second day and a 102.6 final score to finish sixth in the junior women’s championship.

The second Olympic women’s event (50 meter 3×20 Smallbore), won her third national championship of the weekend. She shot a 587 on the first day and had a four-point lead over her nearest competitor. However, a score of 577 on the second day dropped her to second place in the women’s open. Her two-day aggregate score of 1164 and a final score of 100.0, she claimed her third championship title of the competition by winning the Junior Women’s Championship.

Morrissey again fired a personal best on the second day with a 579 and a personal best final score of 100.5 to finish fifth in the junior competition. Lorenzen shot a 583 on the second day to finish eighth overall.

The final women’s event was the non-Olympic event of 50-meter smallbore prone rifle. Beard was the top Frog shooter with scores of 584 and 590 for an aggregate of 1174 to finish eighth overall. With the same aggregate score of 1174, Caitlin Morrissey also finished in the top 10.
