Baseball holds clinic benefitting the Komen Foundation

The first annual TCU Women’s Baseball Clinic got off to a great start, raising more than $2,500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Tarrant County, an event representative said.

The clinic, created to raise joint support for breast cancer and the new baseball season, had around 180 participants, said Traci Larrison, a senior account executive for ISP Sports at TCU. The event started with a fashion show of all of the team’s uniforms with players striking their best poses on the catwalk.

The fashion show was followed by a question and answer session with players, featuring topics ranging from handshakes to bench-clearing brawls. Team members even provided a demonstration on the proper art of congratulatory rear-end slapping.

Later in the night, the women attending turned the tables showing off their skills in the batting cages and on the pitcher’s mound.

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle said the energy in the Sam Baugh Indoor Facility far exceeded expectations, and the turnout provided a huge boost for the cause, the Komen Foundation.

“We’re not raising millions of dollars, but we’re certainly doing anything we can to help,” Schlossnagle said.

The fans were a huge part of getting the clinic started, as well as the team and outside sponsors, Larrison said.

Sponsors included Baylor All Saints Medical Center, Community Bank and Grady’s Restaurant, which provided the food for the evening. Raffle prizes included gift cards, TCU boots, and lower-level tickets to this year’s baseball series against Texas Tech.

Meredith Montgomery, Director of Baseball Operations, said it was a great event to get women involved with the team.

“You get dinner and a fashion show, but then you also get to come out and hit in the cage in heels,” Montgomery said.

Matt Curry, senior infielder, said events like the clinic as well as support from the community help make the college experience so amazing.

“It’s awesome that they are supporting us like this,” Curry said.

The TCU baseball team opens up the season with a series this weekend against Sam Houston State University. Opening night is Friday at TCU’s Lupton Stadium.
