Swimmers begin Caribbean competition Sunday

Swimmers Edgar Crespo and Maria Alvarez along with former Horned Frog Alejandro Gomez will compete at the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Sunday beginning July 18-23.

Crespo will take part in the 50-, 100- and 200-breaststroke events as well as the 50- and 100-butterfly events, representing his native country of Panama. Assistant Swimming Coach Bill Koppelman will be serving as Panama’s Head Swim Coach for the competition.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Crespo topped five other swimmers to turn in the top time of the second heat of the men’s 100-breastroke (1:03.72).

Rising senior Alvarez will compete for Colombia. She holds the school record in the 500-, 1000-, and 1650-freestyle.

Gomez will be competing for the Venezuelan team. As a senior in 2006-07, the Caracas, Venezuela product led TCU in the 200-free (1:39.33), 500-free (4:27.63), 1000-free (9:19.19) and 1650-free (15:31.70). He earned All-MWC honors in the 1650- and 500-free, after third and fourth place finishes, respectively, at the MWC Championship. Gomez currently holds the TCU record in the 1000-free (9:19.19) and owns the second-fastest 1650-free clocking (15:31.70).
