Winkler named to Collegiate National Team

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Winkler has been selected as one of the 22 players for Team USA’s Collegiate National Team.

Winkler, a right-handed pitcher, is the second Horned Frog in school history to earn a spot on the national squad. Jake Arrieta was a member of the 2006 team.

Winkler made one start during the trials and picked up the win. He tossed three scoreless innings without allowing a hit and striking out three. As a freshman, Winkler participated in the trials and narrowly missed making the 22-man roster.

He is coming off an outstanding sophomore campaign that saw him set career highs in every statistical category. He made a school-record 19 starts and finished the season with a 12-3 record to go along with a 3.39 ERA. In 116 2/3 innings pitched, the right-hander fanned 92 and held opponents to a .252 batting average.

The Collegiate National Team will play eight more contests in the United States leading up to July 23 when they depart for Taipei, Taiwan. Highlighting the US schedule will be a contest against Japan in Rosenblatt Stadium on July 21.

Once in Taiwan, the squad will play a four-game series against Chinese Taipei before departing for Japan. In Tokyo, the team will take part in the V FISU World University Baseball Championships, which begin on July 30. They will play Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei and Canada in pool play. The quarterfinals are set to begin on August 3.
