I like anything frombagpipes to sacred harp shape note singing.I also enjoy more formal choral music, someband music and even some easy listening fromthe 70s.’Q: Have you always been a fan of bagpipes?A: “There are some times when you’re just inthe mood for bagpipes. It’s usually when I needto get pumped up for something.”Q: If you could play any instrument in any band,what would it be?A: “I would play the sousaphone in the OhioState marching band. In one of their songs, theband writes the word “Ohio’ as they walk out onthe field. At the end, the sousaphone player strutsout and dots the “i.’ I’d like to be that guy.”Q: Where does your musical influence comefrom?A: “My parents, mostly. I was raised in a veryconservative home and was taught to love choralmusic and hymns. My dad was a broadlyeducatedman with a broad taste in music,from classical to bagpipes. It’sa very stirring, rousingsong that I also listento when I’m writing toget inspiration. It’s history.”Auld Lang Syne Dark Island”This is a bagpipemedley done by theBlack Watch. It’s also calledsacred harp musicafter a hymnal bookreferring to the humanvoice as a sacred harp.Shape note singers are not performers. They’resinging for themselves and God. I’m not afan of Ohio State as auniversity, but I like thefootball team and theband. I listen to the band’s music when I’mwriting and when I need to get pumped up.”
