Women’s team prepares for MWC Championships

The TCU women’s swimming and diving team will return to action Wednesday night when they travel to Denton for a 6 p.m. meet with the University of North Texas.

The meet will be the first of two final nonconference tune-ups for the Frogs this week before they make the trip to Oklahoma City for the Mountain West Championships February 22-26.

The TCU women will look to improve their 4-4 record by facing a Mean Green squad that has yet to win a meet; UNT is 0-9 in head-to-head action this season.

The Lady Frogs enter the match after a 1-1 at home, beating New Mexico but losing to BYU last Friday night in a three-way match at the University Recreation Center Natatorium. Head coach Richard Sybesma expects the best from his team Wednesday night as they begin their final week of competition before the conference championships.

“North Texas has a good program and it’s an up and coming program and we’ll have to swim well to win,” Sybesma said. “I expect us to do well. They’ll rise to the challenge and it’ll be great.”

Part of Sybesma’s confidence comes from the season-long performances of senior Maria Paula Alvarez and sophomore Sabine Rasch. Alvarez and Rasch lead the Horned Frogs with 11 wins apiece after each swimmer picked up two victories Friday. Alvarez won the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events while Rasch placed first in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races.

Even though the Frogs lost to BYU, Sybesma said their win in the 400-yard relay was a big confidence booster and momentum builder as they look to finish the season strong.

“Winning that relay was huge because BYU has been conference champs the last several years,” Sybesma said. “I feel confident in my team, not cocky, confident and I think they have a confidence as well. We could really do well at the conference meet.”

TCU’s men’s and women’s teams will be back in action together for the regular season and home finale Friday night at 6 p.m. when they host Centenary College at the University Recreation Center.
