Young breaks school record in women’s 400 meter dash

Senior Jessica Young broke a school record as the TCU track and field program competed at the Arizona State Invitational Saturday at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium.

Young rallied around the oval with a first-place time of 52.27 in the women’s 400 meters, snapping Nathandra John’s program record clocking of 52.31 from 2006. Young also shattered the ASU Invitational meet record, surpassing the former mark of 53.30 set by the Sun Devils’ Joronda White in 1998. The Frogs’ Kristal Juarez and Briyanni Thomas followed in the event in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Young would later return to the track to help TCU’s 4×100 relay team turn in the fastest time of the spring. The squad of Teneshia Peart, Veronica Jones, Franchelle Hill and Young teamed up for a mark of 44.49 to finish third overall.

Junior Whitney Gipson made her outdoor season field debut Saturday, accepting runner-up honors in the women’s long jump with a top leap of 19-10 ¼. Arizona native Samantha Collins also registered a solid performance, earning a sixth place finish behind Gipson.

Other highlights on the women’s side include distance runners Agnes Kemboi and Tricia Terry finishing the women’s 5,000-meter run in the top-10, while shot putters Kelsey Samuels and Stormy Harrison rounded out the field events in fifth and sixth place.

On the men’s side, triple jumper Cameron Parker excelled to second-place honors with a top mark of 50-3 ¼. Parker, a native of the Bahamas, entered the weekend as the top long jumper in the Mountain West Conference. Sophomore Cameron Tabor also had a solid day, taking third in the shot put (54-8 ¼) and fourth in the discus (174-2).

Hurdler Jordan Pitts rallied around the track to accept third place nods at 52.93 in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. The Greeneville, Texas product also turned in a sixth place finish in the 110-hurdles.

Senior Mychal Dungey paced all Frogs in the men’s 200 meters, turning in a time of 21.19 to take 5th place honors. Sophomore Charles Silmon followed Dungey in seventh place with a time of 21.26 after registering a clocking of 10.47 to take sixth place standards in the men’s 100-meter dash.

Senior Sean Zurko and junior Jack O’Brien continue to push themselves in the mid-distance events. After finishing 1-2 in the 800 meters at the Horned Frog Invitational a week ago, the pair chimed in with back-to-back times in Arizona. O’Brien led the way with a new personal-best clocking of 1:42.92 for 5th places honors, while Zurko followed in sixth at 1:49.34.

TCU ended the evening with the men’s 4×400 quartet of Dungey, Pitts, Zurko and Matthew Love teaming up to earn a fifth place finish with a time of 3:13.01.

The Frogs will return to the Lone Star State next weekend to compete in the Bobby Lane Invitational, hosted by UT Arlington, April 2.
