The No. 65 Women’s Tennis team (7-7, 2-1 MWC) ended their weekend trio with a convincing 7-0 win over conference opponent New Mexico (7-10, 0-3 MWC).
After defeating BYU on Friday and falling to Utah on Saturday, head coach Dave Borelli said he was pleased with the way the squad began conference play this season.
“We made a statement today,” Borelli said. “The best way to make up for a loss is to come back play well and win, and that’s what they did.”
TCU swept the doubles matches to earn their first point.
On the No. 1 court, TCU sophomore Federica Denti and senior Katariina Tuohimaa defeated Michaela Bezdickova and Nikolina Grbac, 8-2.
Frogs’ junior Gaby Mastromarino and sophomore Olivia Smith secured the 8-1 advantage in the No. 2 slot over Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva.
TCU seniors Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg overcame Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
The match concluded with Tuohimaa defeating Bezdickova 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-0) on the No. 1 court.
Besides this, all TCU singles matches were decided in straight sets.
At the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, the Frogs posted 6-0, 6-0 wins over the Lobos. Hertzberg defeated Michaela Oldani and Denti defeated Richardson, respectively.
At the No. 2 slot, Mastromarino surpassed Villanueva, improving her record to 10-2 this spring season.
Smith defeated Grbac 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 4 court, and teammate Babanova defeated Eggleston at the No. 6 court.
TCU will play SMU on Tuesday night in Dallas before continuing conference play with five consecutive road matches.
Borelli is confident about the team’s capabilities as they begin the upcoming schedule.
“I like the ways the kids are playing,” he said.
