Volleyball team heads to Villanova

The TCU volleyball team will be looking to stay undefeated as they travel to Philadelphia today to take part in the Villanova Classic.

The Frogs are coming off two consecutive tournament championships—the TCU tournament two weeks ago and the SMU Doubletree Invitational last weekend—but Head Coach Prentice Lewis said this weekend’s three-game tournament should be a challenge.

“We’ve got tough opponents this weekend,” Lewis said. “Anybody can win on any given day. It depends on how your team comes out, the health of your team, the mindset of your team.”

TCU’s mindset of late has been good as the Frogs have streaked to a 6-0 start. Lewis said her team is playing well, but there are always things they can do better.

“Of course, they’re meeting my expectations,” Lewis said. “There’s always something for us to build on. But we can be a pretty good team when we put our aminds to it.”

For Lewis, the success of her team this year started with seniors Jordan Raines  and Kristen Hester.

Raines, the TCU tournament MVP, and Hester, the SMU tournament MVP, are making the most of their senior seasons, Lewis said.

“They’re taking control of every point they possibly can,” Lewis said. “Every time they touch the ball they’re trying to make it the best point they can.”

Junior Sarah Joeckel has also played a big role in the Frogs’ early season success, especially last weekend when she took home tournament libero MVP honors and led TCU with 71 digs for the tournament.

TCU is scheduled to play Loyola University Maryland today at 4 p.m. and Colgate University Saturday at 10 a.m. before closing out the tournament against the home team and future Big East rival Villanova University Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
