The Caribbean Students Association is preparing for its upcoming dance recital Thursday, Dec. 1 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Brown-Lupton University Union ballroom.

This event will showcase a variety of dance styles including reggae, calypso and African dances, senior nursing major and president of CaribSA, Raveena Smith said. She said CaribSA invited other organizations, including Students for Asian Indian Cultural Awareness, Asian Student Association and African Heritage Association, to participate in the dance recital.

“Our main focus is try to raise awareness of the Caribbean culture. Dance is a huge part of our culture, so that’s what we want to portray to the TCU campus,” Smith said.

Excitement and energy are the two main things people can expect from this event, sophomore religion major, Christie Holland said. She said she hopes the university community will come out with a better understanding of the Caribbean way.

“A lot of the moves that the Caribbeans do are part of the dances we do as Americans. We take a lot of moves from them and make them our own. They’re the root of what we do,” Holland said.

According to the Caribbean Students Association website, “CaribSA aims to educate the TCU community on the region as well as encourage cultural exchange between Caribbean nationals and other students through our yearly cultural and educational activities. In doing so, CaribSA hopes to create a better understanding of and appreciation for the Caribbean culture.”

CaribSA’s dance recital is the fall fundraiser for their free spring event.

The recital will be open to the TCU community.
