FWCD hopes to stay in chase for playoff berth

Houston Christian has something Fort Worth Country Day needs: a conference win.

FWCD (2-3) must defeat Houston Christian (1-4) to remain in contention for a playoff berth.

“This is our chance,” head coach Frank Gendusa said.

FWCD is tied with St. Andrew’s and crosstown rival Trinity Valley for the fourth and final spot to advance to the playoffs.

FWCD owns a three-game losing streak after losing to Houston powerhouse St. John’s, 49-16. The Falcons were up 16-14 at the end of the first quarter but the offense was unable to score for the rest of the game.

“It was a good old-fashioned butt kicking,” Gendusa said. “You can’t do anything about last Friday but we sure can do something about this one.”

The players did not have practice over the weekend but the coaches came in to watch film and make corrections.

The team had to go back to basic blocking and tackling for practice this week, Gendusa said.

Senior defensive back Gaddis House said it is going to take effort and execution of what the players learn in practice to turn the season around this week.

Houston Christian enters the game following its first win of the season over Trinity Valley, 17-14.

House said Houston Christian is known to be a beatable team but he is still nervous because FWCD has assumed it would win in the past and lost.

Going into the third week of the season, FWCD played Grace Prep, which was winless at the time. After triple overtime, the Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 15-13 loss, making it the only win for the Lions to this point in the season.

“We know there will be mistakes but we’ll push through them and have a short-term memory about them,” House said.

Gendusa said the Falcons are not good enough to overcome a lot of mistakes so they will have to limit their penalties and turnovers.

“We’re all working as hard as we can,” House said. “If we all come together, I believe we have a good shot. “
