Golf team still positive after tough day at Isleworth Invitational

Golf team still positive after tough day at Isleworth Invitational

The TCU men’s golf team was not discouraged following a lower-than-expected finish in Tuesday’s final round of the 2012 Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.

“As a team, we struggled a bit, but the conditions were tough and we learned what we needed to improve on during the off-season,” Eli Cole, a redshirt senior who finished at No. 33 in the individual player standings, said.

The team finished 13th out of the 15 teams that competed this year, but some players on the team saw individual success.

Sophomore Julien Brun started the tournament at No. 22 and finished at No. 21—the highest of any TCU player.

Cole made a strong improvement after finishing day one at No. 46. He played his best golf on day three, shooting 73 on his way to 1-up for the round.

Brun and Cole said the team mapped out the course and practiced specific shots in preparation for Isleworth, so they felt encouraged heading in.

But some players struggled with the course. Isleworth has a slope rating of 142 out of a possible 155 with a par 72, according to the United States Golf Association.

Those factors came into play for Daniel Jennevret, Paul Barjon and Michael Culin. Barjon and Culin, both in their first year playing college golf, finished No. 60 and 74, respectively.

The season is still young, though, players said.

Isleworth was the second of two tournaments the team had scheduled this fall, since this time of year is an off-season for golf.

The team is still looking to make a run for the national championship—a goal coach Bill Montigel set for the team before it played its first tournament in September.

“If we remember it is not the best team who wins, but the team who plays best, we are confident we can turn some heads in the spring,” Cole said.
