New York fashion week: this season’s newest trends

New York fashion week: this seasons newest trends

Fall is fast approaching with cooler weather and fashion that makes us want to raid our grandmother’s closets. Designers have conquered the challenge of combining last season’s style successes and embracing new concepts presented on the runway during the New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 shows.

The mood was mature and polished with an array of geometric prints, bold statements, leather, military-inspired pieces and a sweet mix of floral and lace. A relic to signature styles of past decades inspired this season’s top eight trends.

“Going Baroque”
A homage to Versailles with rich embroidery, luxe velvet, fur accents and intricate patterns covered the fall runway at Fashion Week. While mixing textures of tweed, silk and embroidery, J.Crew channels the style of high-end designers such as Proenza Schouler and Dolce & Gabbana.

“Military Minded”
Military-inspired fashion made a big statement on the runway this season with army greens and khaki hues. Designers reported for duty with gilded gold, feminine embellishments and belts, creating no shortages of cinched waists. With an updated twist on the classic statement, women everywhere are sure to find a style that suits them best.

“White-Out”
Who said you cannot wear white after Labor Day? This fall, “winter white” has a new meaning. Models were sent down the runway in all white from head to toe. Minimalistic pieces were seen enhancing the monochromatic look with simple lines and exquisite tailoring. Designers such as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row and Peter Som nailed the chic, cool girl look in their collections this fall.

“Oxblood”
This season, deep shades of red resemble blood-rich tones. The color takes center stage in strong plaids and pieces attributing American heritage and an outdoor spirit. With palates of burgundy, maroon, and red, anyone can wear these raw and rich hues this season. Whether it is in your wardrobe, on your nails or on your lips, oxblood red is a flattering choice for everyone.

“Leather, Leather Everywhere”
Leather is back and is being seen more than ever before this season. From dainty accessories, embellished with leather trimmings and accents, to pants, shoes, and dresses, leather is the new hot commodity this fall. Designer Alexander Wang updated the style with crisp, clean lines in leather head-to-toe. No longer is leather an accent piece or a simple jacket, but the look is on overdrive in all leather outfits and one of the hottest trends for fall/winter 2012.

“Room to Grow”
One trend designers cannot get enough this fall and winter is the over-sized ensemble. Not only does the look scream sporty chic, but the practicality of a large coat is a must-have staple for the cooler weather. Derek Lam’s sleek lines inspired us to pair tailored pants with a boxy, over-sized coat to stay warm and chic this season.

“Prints Galore”
Mixing and matching is not just for playing dress up anymore. Bold geometric prints are being paired with anything and everything and all patterns and prints are accepted. The fall runways exploded with pops of bright color and print. With a flashback to the '60s and '70s, designers like Jil Sander and Balmain revamped an old trend.

“Hopeless Romantic”
Sweet and sexy is on the agenda this fall. Vibrant floral and delicate lace immaculate femininity in extra detailing with bows, jewels, floppy hats and all things girly. Reminiscent of Shakespeare and the dress of the 17th century, accentuated waists, peplums, pink and lace all are on trend this season in a super chic, sophisticated way. Marc Jacobs and Givenchy featured this trend and could not have been more on point.

New York Fashion Week is a fashion lover's dream, and this season it is easier than ever for anyone to accept these new trends into his or her wardrobe with just a few added pieces. From countless bold and rich prints to silhouettes to delicate lace and embellishment, this season shines with opportunity to kick up your wardrobe a notch.
