Mens club soccer team advances to Nationals

The 2012 men's club soccer team has become the first team in the club's history to advance to nationals after defeating Texas A&M 3-2.

Sunday's game extended into overtime after both teams remained scoreless after two 45 minute halves.

Although the Aggies controlled the field through much of the game, the Frogs' defense stayed organized and denied the Aggies' attempts at goals, captain Michael Offutt said.

Remaining tied at 0-0 after an additional 15 minutes, the game was determined through a shoot out.

The Frogs' three goals were made by Milton Geist, Offutt and Nick Custis.

The Frogs broke out in celebration before the referee could blow the final whistle after keeper Brett Battles blocked A&M's last penalty kick.

"It was an unbelievable moment and the best feelings I've ever experienced," Battles said.

Considered the underdog, the victory was a great accomplishment for the team, Offutt said.

The last time these two teams met, the Frogs fell 3-0 to the Aggies in College Station during the regular season.

Having the entire team present, staying focused and determination made the difference in this second meeting, head coach Kenneth Christensen said.

Christensen said he honestly did not think the team would make it to nationals.

"I overheard one of the guys saying, 'we are going to win this weekend and go to Memphis.' I thought, there is no way," he said. "But I kept that thought to myself and I must say, the guys really made me believe more and more after each game."

The Frogs will compete in the National Tournament Nov. 15-17 in Memphis, Tennessee.
