Chancellor Victor Boschini answered questions regarding the recent gun law at the Faculty Senate meeting Thursday afternoon.

“It’s not that our Board [of Trustees] is saying 'Let’s carry guns, or let’s not carry guns,'" he said. "Our Board said that we will follow any state or national law to the letter, and we will."

Boschini said if the concealed carry law changes, he and the Board of Trustees may have to revisit their decision.

Boschini also spoke about the two days he spent in Austin this week lobbying with six faculty and staff members and 20 students for the Tuition Equalization Grant.

The TEG is available for Texas residents or nonresidents who are National Merit Finalists and who are enrolled at private Texas colleges or universities.

“The maximum I think you can get out of the grant is $5,200,” Boschini said. “We were well-received by everyone who went, but they still haven't voted on it.”

He also took time to clarify TCU's retirement plan. Some retirees feel they are being forced into the university's retirement plan, Boschini said, but there are many choices available to them.

“In the plan we are giving them now, they can choose between 12 different plans,” he said. “We have the richest benefit plan of any school in America."

Thomas Crowell also discussed the Intensive English Program at the university. He said the IEP serves international students and the development of their English language skills.

“We have people from all over the world come to us to try to learn English as fast as they can and learn it well so they can go on and do something else at TCU or another university,” Crowell said.

There are 69 students enrolled in the IEP this semester, Crowell said. The majority come from Saudi Arabia and China.

The next Faculty Senate meeting will be held in the Brown-Lupton University Union Chambers on Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
