Paschal goes 3-2 in Granbury tournament

Paschal High School baseball uses pre-district tournaments to prepare for the season

The Panther baseball team finished 3-2 in the Granbury Classic Chevrolet Tournament in Granbury last weekend.

Paschal beat Burleson 4-3 on Thursday, Stephenville 7-3 on Friday, and Western Hills 9-7 on Saturday. The team lost to Mansfield Timberview on Thursday and fell to Abilene Cooper 6-1 Friday.

Head coach Darrell Preston said the first game against Burleson was interesting because the game had to be cut an inning short due to the tournament's time limit. Since the Panthers were designated the home team, they were allowed to hit to complete the inning.

Down 3-1 with the bases loaded, Drake Camilleri hit a walk-off game-winning triple to knock in final three runs to win the game.

Preston said the team was “hit and miss” in the tournament. However, he said that he uses the first three tournaments, roughly 15 games, to find out who the nine starters will be for the season.

The team returns seven of the Panthers’ starters from last year, including All-District third baseman Hunter Nurdin. Preston said other players expecting big season are junior catcher Austin Cornish, junior left-handed pitcher Hunter Speilman, and junior right-handed pitcher Beau Campbell.

Preston said Speilman will be Paschal’s No. 1 starter and Campbell will be their No. 2 for the season.

“Of course we want to win the game, but is more important to find out who your top nine guys are,” Preston said.

The Panthers will take the field again this weekend starting with two games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday in a tournament at Southwest high School. The team’s first district game will be next Tuesday at home against Arlington Sam Houston at 7 p.m.
