TCU began its eight-game road trip by defeating the University of Texas at Arlington 5-4 at the Ballpark in Arlington Tuesday night.

“I think being in this environment you have to soak it in ad I think that’s what we did,” junior right-hander Stefan Crichton said. “This is the first game we played where we’ve been clicking on all cylinders.”

The Frogs fell 2-0 behind the Mavericks early.

In the first inning, Justin Copeland tripled to left field and Matt Shortall scored. UTA lengthened its lead in the second when Eric Tate singled to left field, advancing Peter Cuomo to second base. On a wild pitch, Tate advanced to third and Cuomo scored.

TCU was on the board in the third. Cody Jones was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Kyle Bacak flied out to deep center field, giving Jones time to move to third base. Keaton Jones hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home the runner.

Jantzen Witte had a lead-off walk in the fourth. Kevin Cron singled through the left side, advancing Witte to second. Witte moved to third on Paul Hendrix’s fly ball to center field. With two outs, Jerrick Suiter hit a two-run double to left field and TCU took the lead 3-2. Jones followed with a single and scored Suiter, putting TCU up 4-2.

In the fifth inning, the Mavericks cut the lead to 4-3. Miller singled through the left side and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. Walker doubled to left center, scoring Miller.

TCU furthered its lead when Keaton Jones hit a line drive to second base but the first baseman vacated the bag and Jones beat the pitcher to the bag for an infield single. Dylan Fitzgerald followed with a single to right, advancing Jones to third. Witte reached on a fielder’s choice and Jones scored.

UTA stirred up some trouble in the bottom of the inning but it was not enough to overcome TCU’s lead. Miller was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Copeland doubled to a gap in right center but Fitzgerald came up with the ball and threw to Paul Hendrix who executed the relay throw to home plate. Bacak tagged out the tying run to end the inning.

Freshman Alex Young earned his first career save. He retired the six batters he faced, striking out two.

TCU improved to 9-11 and UTA dropped to 10-10. TCU heads north to face Big 12 rival Oklahoma. Preston Morrison (3-1, 0.96 ERA) will take the mound for the Frogs at Mitchell Park Friday night.
