The women's tennis team's winning streak stopped at nine matches after Rice claimed a 5-2 win Sunday.

The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs slipped to 12-2 on the year and lost for the first time since Feb. 2. The No. 27 Owls improved to 13-4 and won for the first time in their last 13 attempts against TCU.

Rice won all three doubles matches to open with a 1-0 lead.

No. 30-ranked Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath beat TCU’s No. 42-ranked tandem of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith, 8-6, for Rice’s first win. The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak for Nichols and Smith.

The Owls followed with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point, then won the match at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker.

Rice won first sets of singles on four of the six courts.

Federica Denti claimed a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 5 to score TCU’s first point before Monika Sirilova added a 6-3, 7-5 triumph for TCU’s second point. The win at No. 6 made the score 3-2 in favor of Rice.

No. 65-ranked Stefanie Tan and No. 104-ranked Simona Parajova forced third sets at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, but were unable to get over the hump in either set as the Owls closed out a 5-2 win in the match.

Smith, ranked 79th, fell for the first time this season at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4 and slipped to 10-1 on the year.

“It was tough, but playing a match like this will help us,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “I’m disappointed we lost and played so poorly at the beginning. My hats off to Rice, they played well. We made a match of it and tried to come back. Monika and Federica played well and that’s good, but we’ve got to get better in doubles. It’s a long year and we’ve got a lot of matches ahead of us. We’ve just got to regroup and get better.”

TCU returns to action March 27 when it travels to Baylor. The Frogs are 2-0 in Big 12 play.
