Men’s tennis to play Texas Saturday

The TCU men’s tennis team will continue Big 12 play against former Southwest Conference rival University of Texas Saturday.

The match will be the 44th meeting between the two with the Longhorns at a 26-17 edge in the series. The No. 23 Longhorns are 13-6 overall and the No. 35 Horned Frogs are 16-6. Both teams are 1-1 in the Big 12.

“There is a very high amount of respect between TCU and UT,” head coach David Roditi said. “These two teams will be representing college tennis at its highest standards.”

Roditi said the respect between these two foes stemmed from the 20-year-long relationship among the coaching staff.

UT coach Michael Center was a former Horned Frog as he spent two seasons as TCU’s head coach in 1999 and 2000. During both years, Center led the Frogs to the NCAA Tournament. Once Center left for a coaching position at UT, Roditi joined him as his assistant at UT for two seasons.

The current assistant coach for the Longhorns, Ricardo Rubio, was also a Horned Frog. He not only attended TCU but was on the men’s tennis team with Roditi as his doubles partner.

Roditi said the team had a good week of practice for UT and were focused on being more aggressive and keeping composure, which he said cost the Frogs their first Big 12 loss against Oklahoma last weekend.

“What makes Texas really good is that they are all talented with a lot of experience,” Roditi said. “Not to mention I know really how well they are coached, but we are ready for them.”

Roditi said the team not only wanted to walk away with a win Saturday but also break their attendance record of 1,425 fans set at the Texas A&M match.

A Lettermen’s Day for former TCU tennis players will take place before the match with a fan tailgate set to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot. Free pizza and Salsa Limon will be served and live music bands will be playing throughout the day.

“The team is excited to play UT, and it means a lot to us to get the fans excited too,” Roditi said.

The first serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
