Finnegan offers complete game, error gives Kansas State 2-1 win

TCU’s starter Brandon Finnegan threw a complete game, but an unearned run in the second inning was enough to give Kansas State the 2-1 win Saturday.

With the win, Kansas State also won the series, breaking TCU’s streak of three-straight Big 12 Conference series wins.

The winning run came after lead-off batter Austin Fisher reached base on a throwing error from sophomore shortstop Keaton Jones. Fisher moved to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Fisher went on to third on a ground out. The next batter beat a throw to first for a single to allow Fisher to score.

TCU was first to score in the first inning. Cody Jones beat out a throw to first to start the game, then stole second. After a ground out, he was on third base, and  Jantzen Witte got a single to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead. The single extended Witte’s hitting streak to eight games.

The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning, though, after the tying run got on with a lead-off walk. A one-out single allowed the runner on first make it around to tie the game at one.

TCU led off the third and sixth innings with hits, but both runners were left stranded. Cody Jones, who had the hit in the sixth inning, got his eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Kansas State’s starting pitcher Matt Wivinis (6-1) lasted through three innings, which was enough for him to be credited with the win. He allowed the one run on three hits. He stuck out three and did not walk anyone.

Finnegan (0-6) got his sixth loss of the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He gave up two walks and struck out eight batters. In eight of Finnegan’s 11 starts this season, TCU has scored two runs or fewer.

The loss brings TCU to 19-23 overall and 7-10 in Big 12. The Horned Frogs will have to win Sunday to avoid the series sweep and will trust in right-hander Andrew Mitchell, who will be starting for TCU. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Tointon Family Stadium.
