The TCU Schieffer School of Journalism and the Dow Jones News Fund sponsored their annual journalism workshop for high-school students from June 17 to June 28.

According to the Schieffer School website, the two-week event was designed as a way for students considering a career in journalism to sharpen their reporting skills by learning from both professional journalists and Schieffer School faculty members.

Workshop counselor and TCU journalism major Mary Muller said, “I think it is a good opportunity for [the high schoolers] to get real journalism experience. It’s also a good way for them to see if they want to pursue a career in journalism or even attend TCU.”

High-school students who wished to attend the workshop first had to apply to the program. Those who were accepted were given full scholarships to cover the cost of their being hosted at TCU. The workshop was open to high school juniors and seniors from around the North Texas metroplex.

“I’ve learned a lot of the social skills required in journalism,” Flower Mound High School senior Matthew Wall said. “I have really enjoyed learning new techniques and seeing what I can apply to our own paper, The Wire.”

Throughout the two-week workshop, students were instructed in news reporting, writing, editing, photography, design and ethics. They then put their skills to work and started producing their own articles.

Martin High School senior Abby Bishop said, “I’ve learned a lot about getting out of my comfort zone. It’s not like high school. I’ve had to find people and talk to people I have never met before.”

The students' finished work can be viewed online.
