Volleyball sweeps Kansas State in final home match

TCU volleyball gave the sold-out crowd gathered in the University Recreation Center something to cheer about in the final home match of season Wednesday night, as the team swept the Kansas State Wildcats 3-0.

The team picked up TCU’s first win over the Wildcats in program history by way of three closely contested sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-22).

The Frogs were led by first-year outside hitter Ashley Smith and sophomore right side hitter Blaire Pickens who carried TCU with nine kills each with first-year middle blocker Natalie Gower leading the team in blocks with seven.

The win moves the Horned Frogs to 16-14 on the season, ensuring an above .500 finish despite having just a 4-11 record in the Big 12.

The two teams went back and forth in the first frame, with TCU maintaining a steady two point lead the majority of the set. Coming out of a timeout, the Frogs used a used a kill from Pickens and a K-State error to win the first set 25-23.

The second set put the Frogs in different situation, as they found themselves trailing 15-12 when the media timeout was called. However, two kills from junior Stephanie Holland and two straight blocks from junior Mattie Burleson allowed TCU to reclaim the lead at 16-15, and go on to win the set 25-22.

In what would prove to be the final frame, TCU enjoyed an early 12-8 lead before a late 4-0 run by the Wildcats would propel Kansas State to a slim 22-21 lead. However, the Frogs responded with four straight points of their own, including a service ace by sophomore Alexia Heist, to clinch a 25-22 third set win and match victory.

TCU will wrap up its season in Lubbock against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday, Nov. 30. The match is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
