Brun captures win, Frogs finish fifth at golf’s Big 12 Tournament

Junior golfer Julien Brun captured the individual win at the Big 12 Tournament on Sunday, shooting two straight rounds of 66 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.

His teammates were able to accomplish a fifth place finish.

Brun, a native of Antibes, France, tied a Big 12 record for lowest fourth round score, and his overall score of 277 strokes fell one shy of breaking the Big 12 record for fewest through 72 holes.

After finishing Sunday with a nine stroke victory over second place Sam Daley from Iowa State, Brun said, “I had a good start today and it helped me build momentum. My wedge game was very good. It helped give me a lot of birdies inside five feet.”

“I didn’t have to take too many chances. My driving was okay after a poor start the first day. Every round is key and to battle and shoot 74, instead of an 80, to stay in the tournament on the first day kept me in it.”

Despite shooting two over par on the first day, Brun finished strong by having par or below on 37 of his final 39 holes.

Brun’s performance helped the 52nd ranked Horned Frogs finish ahead of No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 27 Baylor, while No. 15 Texas came out with the tournament victory.

The Horned Frogs were also aided by the ninth place finish of Chelso Barrett. The freshman finished the four day event at 5 over par with 293 strokes.

Sophomore Paul Barjon finished the event with a 70 on Sunday, which helped him finish tied for 32nd place with freshman Giulio Castagnara at 304 strokes.

TCU was also aided by the 41st place finish of junior Sarosh Adi.

Head coach Bill Montigel said of his players, ““We have a young team. They didn’t start the tournament well, but they hung tough and finished strong.”

The Horned Frogs look to carry this strong finish into the NCAA Tournament, where they hope to be invited for the 25th consecutive season. They find out if they have been invited to participate on May 5.
