TCU has hired the former assistant coach at the University of Virginia (UVA) to be the next swimming and diving head coach.

Sam Busch, who spent the past four years at UVA, is replacing Richard Sybesma, who retired after 38 years at TCU. Busch also served as recruiting coordinator at UVA.

Before joining the University of Virginia staff, Busch coached at his alma mater, the University of Arizona, from 2007 to 2009. He also coached at West Virginia University from 2009 to 2011.

While at Virginia, Busch helped the women’s swimming team win three consecutive ACC titles from 2014 to 2016.  At one point during the 2015 season, UVA was the No. 1 team in the country. They finished fifth at the NCAA Championships in both 2015 and 2016.

Busch said he is humbled to join a university where so many teams have succeeded.

“When the opportunity to usher in a new era of TCU swimming and diving was offered to me, I accepted the honor with great enthusiasm and heartfelt gratitude,” Busch said.

Chris Del Conte, the athletic director, said he’s excited to have a coach who was so instrumental to the success of their former program.

“Sam is a perfect fit for us,” Del Conte said. “He comes from a tradition-rich Virginia program in which he played a major role in their recruiting and team success.  He is also part of a great family coaching tree.”

Busch’s father helped Team USA to 64 medals in the 2012 and 2016 summer Olympic games.  He recently retired as the National Team Director for Team USA Swimming.  He spent 22 seasons as head coach at Arizona, where he was named NCAA Coach of the Year six times. Busch’s brother, Augie, was the head swimming coach at Virginia the past four years and will be the head coach at Arizona next season.
