Students looking for a summer job can look no further than the campus itself. The University Recreation Center is now hiring for the summer.

“I’m looking for member services staff and lifeguards for both pools,” Aubrey Kettrick, Assistant Director of Aquatics and Member Services, said. “The weight room and marketing team are always looking for new staff as well.”

Member services include a variety of positions and different tasks.

“It’s mostly facility supervision– making sure that everyone in the building is accounted for,” Kettrick said. “Other tasks involve communication, problem-solving, equipment checkout and cash handling. All of which brings great experience.”

Lifeguards must be certified but the rec center offers the chance for students to become American Red Cross certified, Kettrick said.

The rec center is holding an American Red Cross certification course from April 8-11, with a cost of $225 per person. Completion of this course results in one being lifeguard, first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) certified.

Kettrick said she believes that these jobs can become very beneficial to students in the future.

“The magnitude of walking into an interview and being able to be an effective communicator after plenty of interaction with staff and community members is very important,” Kettrick said. “It’s great to know emergency response as well.”

Many current employees at the Recreational Center believe the experience to be rewarding. Brooke Wertzberger, a member of the weight room staff, says her job motivates her.

“Being in an environment with other like-minded people that prioritize health and fitness helps me stick to my priorities,” Wertzberger said. “And with a bunch of people sharing similar interests, we are able to help keep the atmosphere at the Rec lively and exciting!”

Applicants must be available from May to August, but employment can continue into the next school year.
