All club sports have returned to campus this semester despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mary Ellen Milam, the associate director of programs at the University Recreation Center, said the safe return of club sports is essential for many students.

“We wanted clubs to be able to be an outlet for people to have some kind of healthy activity but do it within guidelines,” she said. “It’s a way for students to have some normalcy in their college experience.”

In addition to typical COVID-19 guidelines like wearing a mask and social distancing, attendance is mandatory, travel is restricted within the metroplex, and competitive events cannot be held on campus.

Milam said the players are dedicated to following and enforcing the necessary rules so they can prevent the suspension of play due to the spread of the coronavirus.

“We’re going to do this, and we’re going to do this safely because we want to continue to stay active,” said Miliam.

Ella Canfield, the club tennis vice president, said tennis practice provides a much-needed break from online classes.

“Just sitting in my room all day on Zoom, it’s nice to get outside and move,” said Canfield.

All 25 club sports are currently active on campus, in some capacity. No club sport has had to suspend play and quarantine, but the programs have plans in place if need be.
