No. 22 TCU volleyball won big on Senior Night, shutting out the Texas Tech Red Raiders in three sets.
The Frogs entered the night with a five-game winning streak in matches against the Red Raiders and looked to walk away with a win in their final home game of the regular season.
Spotlight players included standout outside hitter Mia Wesley, who drives the Red Raiders’ offense, and TCU’s Melanie Parra, a dynamic talent with the potential to claim the NCAA Player of the Year title.
The Red Raiders opened the first set with an ace but followed it with two service errors. On the other side of the net, Horned Frog setter Stephanie Young showcased her height and left-hand dominance, utilizing setter dumps to rack in her attack stats.
Texas Tech dug themselves a hole quickly, falling into a deficit of 15-9 after a sharp cross-court kill courtesy of Melanie Parra, forcing the Red Raiders into a timeout. TCU’s junior outside hitter Jalyn Gibson fell into her rhythm as an instrument for the Frogs, getting kills from the outside, opposite and back row.
Unable to climb back from behind, Texas Tech lost the first set 25-14. Tallying the first set win for the Frogs of the night.
The pace changed through the second set. The Red Raiders played higher and slower at the net whereas TCU’s offense was quick and low.
Texas Tech boasted two big blocks in a row to create their 3-6 lead early on. Red Raider outside hitter Brynn Williams attacked well with powerful swings to challenge the block, but the Frogs continued to play free and relaxed to pull ahead 15-10. Texas Tech managed to close the gap to tie at 18-18, and the rest of the set was an intense back-and-forth.
