Wright to forego Dallas appearances

Read more coverage of Wright’s scheduled appearances. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright has canceled his appearance at the Brite Divinity School Black Church Summit, according to a statement posted on Brite’s home page today.

Brite’s Wednesday statement:

“A Brite Divinity School official has received notice that Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. will not attend the State of the Black Church Summit and Awards Banquet. All events scheduled for Friday and Saturday will continue as planned. The new location of the Summit is Paul Quinn College. The Awards Banquet will be held at Friendship-West Baptist Church.

“The schedule and media alert will be released later today.”

Wright was scheduled to attend a luncheon and an awards banquet Saturday in Dallas. The summit events scheduled for Friday and Saturday will continue as planned, according to the statement posted Wednesday afternoon.

Two of the three summit events Wright was to appear at were originally scheduled to be held at the Kelly Alumni Center, but the Board of Trustees voted last week to move the events off campus, citing “security issues.”

Wright’s scheduled visits to churches in Tampa, Fla. and Houston have also been canceled because of security concerns, staff of the respective churches said.

The previously-scheduled black church conference will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas. A luncheon panel discussion is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Paul Quinn College in Dallas. The awards banquet is programmed for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Friendship-West Baptist Church.

Check back later for more details.
