USA Today: Big East football schools met Tuesday

Presidents and athletic directors from the Big East football schools will meet Tuesday night in New York City to discuss the league’s future according to published sources.

Calls to the chancellor’s office were directed to the athletic department where they were transferred to a university official and then not answered.

TCU officials will be at the meeting according to a report on USAToday.com which was posted on Tuesday afternoon.

Head football coach Gary Patterson said during his weekly press luncheon Tuesday that TCU Athletics Director Chris Del Conte was in New York Tuesday to meet with other Big East officials.

Reports of the meeting had not surfaced before the press conference. Patterson mentioned the trip while answering an unrelated question.

“My guy’s in New York,” Patterson said. “I don’t have much time for it. Hopefully somebody will be smart about all of this and understand what’s good for college football. ”

Despite the recent conference shakeups, Patterson said he was confident TCU won’t be negatively affected.

“I think TCU will be fine,” Patterson said. “I don't see us as any less of a commodity than we were last year when we were taken the first time. We’ll move on in what we have to do.”

But Patterson said he does have reservations about playing in a large, super-conference, something that might happen should the Big East and Big 12 merge.

“I’ve been in a 16-team conference in the WAC,” Patterson said. “And to be honest with you, I didn’t really like it too much. I think that's too big.”

Syracuse and Pittsburgh announced their departure for the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sunday.

The departure has stirred up recent talks about a possibility of a "super conference" with the Big 12.
