Frogs begin two-game series against Texas Tech

The TCU baseball team plans to continue its winning ways in an abbreviated two-game series against Texas Tech this weekend.

Inclement weather caused Friday’s game to be cancelled. Weather permitting, the first game of the series will be on 2p.m. Saturday.

The Frogs come into the series on a three-game winning streak. Two of the team’s victories during the winning streak came in games where the Frogs trailed in the eighth inning or later.

Senior outfielder Jason Coats said the winning streak was due to hard work and not making small mistakes.

The young players stepped up as well to replace the many hurt players on the team, Coats said. The young players struggled early on, but they have matured quickly, he said.

The team has, however, made 15 errors in its last six games. The infielders stayed late at practice this week working on their defense, Coats said.

As far as the weather is concerned, Coats said he believed the team was prepared for anything. The team would be ready to move the tarp and play at a moment’s notice, he said.

Coats said he also believed the rainout will help the pitching staff by allowing more pitchers to be available for a shortened, two-game series.

Texas Tech is 10-3 on the season and is coming off a win Tuesday at No. 10 Arizona State.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann probably will start Saturday’s game for the Red Raiders. He has a 2-1 record with a 1.27 ERA in three starts this season.

Coats said the Frogs would attack von Schamann’s fastball. TCU also will be patient against von Schamann and try to build up his pitch count to get him out of the game, Coats said.

Texas Tech also has the two top base stealers in the Big 12. Junior utility player Jamodrick McGruder is first in the Big 12 with 12 stolen bases while junior outfielder Barrett Barnes is tied for second with eight stolen bases.

Opposing base stealers have attempted to steal 16 times against the Frogs and have been caught stealing only twice.

Barnes also leads Texas Tech in home runs with three and in RBIs with 14.

After the Texas Tech series, TCU will begin a nine-game road trip before returning to Lupton Stadium.
