TCU baseball gets first win of the season, defeats Dallas Baptist 6-1

The TCU baseball team now has a mark in the win column after its 6-1 win Tuesday night against the Dallas Baptist University Patriots.

Junior transfer Trevor Seidenberger got his first start with the team and pitched six shutout innings. The left-hander did not allow any hits and struck out six batters. He issued one walk and allowed one unearned run.

Trey Teakell allowed two hits in his 2/3 innings of work. Senior right-hander Justin Scharf came in to finish off the seventh the eighth innings, where he struck out two and did not give up a hit or a walk. The Frogs’ closer, junior right-hander Andrew Mitchell, then came in to finish off the game by retiring all six batters faced and striking out one.

Sophomore Derek Odell started the offensive game with a one-out hit in the first inning. Kevin Cron then brought Odell around on a double to right-center field, his first RBI of the season. Junior Paul Hendrix scored the Frogs’ second run after a walk to sophomore Keaton Jones and a hit by sophomore Cody Jones, which was his first RBI of the season as well.

TCU extended their lead in the sixth inning when eight Frogs went to the plate, with three crossing home plate. After Cron got his second RBI of the game, Brett Johnson extended his hitting streak to four games when he pulled a two-run single to bring the lead to five.

The Patriots notched a run on the board after a TCU error. Derek Odell saved a few runners when he snagged a line drive and doubled up the runner at second.

The Frog batters answered the Patriots’ run in the eighth when Cron recorded his third RBI of the game driving in C. Jones.

The win marked the first time TCU recorded a victory against DBU since May 11, 2009. The Patriots had won five straight games against the Frogs since then. This season, former Horned Frog baseball player Brance Rivera was in the Patriots’ dugout as assistant coach.

The win moves TCU to a 1-6 record for the season. Next up for the Frogs, the team head to Florida for a weekend when they head to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins. The three-game series starts Friday night at 5:30.
