Red Carpet Recognition Affair celebrates students’ accomplishments

Students and organizations were recognized for their achievements Sunday at the Red Carpet Recognition Affair hosted by the office of Inclusiveness and Intercultural Services.

Students and organizations were given awards and students who participated with Minority Student Leadership Conference were honored. The Community Scholar Scholarship Class of 2013 also recognized their advisors and presented their first study-abroad scholarship.

Awards were given for social justice, outstanding service, global citizenship, organization of the year, rising freshman, emerging sophomore, outstanding junior, accomplished senior, and many more. The Diversity Poster Competition winner was also announced at the event.

"The purpose of the Red Carpet Recognition Affair was to basically just celebrate the entire academic year, the accomplishments and achievements of student individuals as well as organizations, and it also was an event to make up for not having the bigger event known as the Intercultural Banquet," Timeka Gordon, assistant director for Inclusiveness and Intercultural Services, said.

IIS usually holds the Intercultural Banquet at a local hotel to honor students and organizations for their achievements during that year.

Gordon said lack of money was the main reason IIS did not hold the Intercultural Banquet this year. Gordon said they held the Red Carpet Recognition Affair because they did not want to let the year pass without recognizing students' achievements.
