Top TCU recruit Karviar Shepherd ruled ineligible by NCAA

ESPN top-100 basketball recruit and prize of TCU's 2013 recruiting class, Karviar Shepherd, has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA due to high school academics, TCU spokesperson Andy Anderson said.

Shepherd, who was already working out with the team on campus and is enrolling in fall semester classes, will appeal the ruling under the standard NCAA process, Anderson said.

TCU head basketball coach Trent Johnson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Shepherd, a 6’10, 225 pound center, was ruled ineligible due to academic reasons from his high school, Prime Prep Academy.

The charter school, founded by former NFL and MLB player Deion Sanders, is a magnet school for aspiring athletes.

Calls to Trent Johnson’s office and to Prime Prep Academy were not returned Thursday.

A four-star recruit, Shepherd was projected to be the starting center for TCU’s 2013-14 team. He committed to TCU over Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M.
