TCU student and Miss Missouri Shelby Ringdahl reached the top 12 in the 2014 Miss America pageant Sunday.

The senior musical theater major participated in the lifestyle and fitness swimsuit competition and the evening gown portion during the live broadcast on ABC.

The contestants had only a few minutes to change between competitions, and before walking onstage in a red bikini, Ringdahl told host Lara Spencer, “I had time for hairspray and butt glue.”

Ringdahl was referring to spray adhesive often used in pageants that keeps swimsuits in place to avoid sagging or wrinkling.

Ringdahl missed the top 10 cut, which would have allowed her to perform her vocal talent to “Defying Gravity” from "Wicked" on television.

For placing in the top 12 at the pageant, Ringdahl will receive a $5,000 scholarship, according to the Miss America Organization website. In a previous interview with TCU 360, Ringdahl said she had already won $14,000 in scholarships from competing in two local and two state pageants.

Miss New York Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014, with Miss California Crystal Lee, Miss Oklahoma Kelsey Griswold, Miss Florida Myrrhanda Jones and Miss Minnesota Rebecca Yeh rounding out the top five.

Miss Texas Ivana Hall placed in the top 10.
