TCU women’s swimming and diving wins season opener

The women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a win over Kansas on Thursday afternoon at the TCU Aquatic Center.

Behind two diving wins and two wins from sophomore Mikayla Winkler, the Horned Frogs upended the Jayhawks by a score of 176 to 124.

Winkler earned a team-high 18 points with wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. As a team, TCU finished with 11 event wins.

Head coach Richard Sybesma was most pleased with two freshmen overcoming nerves to earn their first even wins at the Division 1 level.

Julie Grace Sanders took home a win in the 50-yard freestyle, and Hannelore Strash also earned a win the 100-yard butterfly.

“I’m really impressed with the cohesiveness of this team,” head coach Richard Sybesma said. “It was good to get the freshmen experience. It was good to see them nervous before their first meet.”

After swimming just one home meet in 2012, Sybesma said it was good to start the season at home.

“We had a good crowd here today for 1:00 in the afternoon, and it was good to open our season at home,” Sybesma said. “It gives our swimmers a lot of momentum when [we can] swim at home.”

Next on the schedule for the Frogs is a home match against North Carolina on Saturday (both the men and women will swim).

“They’re a good team,” Sybesma said. “We’ll have to swim just as well or better to win.”

Saturday’s match starts at 12 p.m.
