TCU defeated Texas state 63-50 at home Saturday night.

After a slow start in the first half, TCU head coach Jeff Mittie yelled from the bench for Zahna Medley to start shooting.

The next possession, she responded with a three-pointer that began a comeback from an early deficit to Texas State. She went on to add three more en route to a 63-50 win.

Medley finished with 21 points to lead all scorers, and she was the only person who could find her stroke during the game. As a team, the Frogs shot 28 percent from the field.

 “We talk about making the right play, and for Zahna [Medley], the right play is shooting the ball,” Mittie said. “She needs to stay aggressive.”

TCU started 1-for-11 from the field, but changed their gameplan to involve simply getting to the rim. The Bobcats allowed 30 free throws, and TCU was able to capitalize, making all but six. When the Frogs started the second half again struggling to make a basket, Mittie said he told his team to keep drawing fouls.

“I told them let’s just get to the free throw line,” he said.

Defense was a strong point for TCU (2-1), maintaining a lead late in the second half despite an almost four minute scoring drought. The Frogs’ defense also held the Bobcats (1-2) to 26 percent from the field.

Sophomore forward Caitlin Diaz set a career-high with 11 rebounds, and the Frogs out-rebounded the Bobcats 52-44.

“I know my job is to get rebounds for the team,” Diaz said.

Sophomore forward Veja Hamilton added 10 points and four rebounds, but said there was still a lot of room for improvement.

 “We need to have better team chemistry,” she said.

Texas State, who has now lost two games in a row to Big 12 opponents, was led in scoring by senior guard Kaylan Martin.

Despite a season-low offensive showing, Mittie was pleased how the game ended up.

“This isn’t a game we would win by double digits a year ago,” Mittie said. “But it was enough to win.”

The Frogs will be back in action against Grambling State Monday. First tip is at 7 p.m. in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
