The No. 25 TCU women’s tennis team (3-4, 0-0 Big 12) was plagued with injuries this weekend, losing against No. 74 DePaul (4-1, 0-0 Big East), No. 30 Purdue (2-1, 0-0 Big 10) and No. 42 Illinois (4-1, 0-0 Big 10).

Junior Stefanie Tan suffered an injury during warm ups and was unable to play against DePaul on Friday. Later the same day, junior Simona Parajova was forced to retire during her doubles match.

“No one understood what happened. No one expected this,” freshman Sofiko Kadzhaya said.

The Frogs fought hard in singles action, but the Blue Demons took a 4-0 victory after three straight set wins.

The Horned Frogs pushed through physical setbacks during their matchup with Purdue on Saturday. Tan returned to play with senior Monika Sirilova and won 6-3 against Nicole Robinson and Natalia Davila. TCU took the doubles point against the Boilermakers but ultimately lost 4-2.

In singles, sophomore Mimi Fotopoulos defeated Purdue’s No. 110 Mara Schmidt 6-3, 6-3 in her first win over a ranked opponent this season.

During Sunday’s matchup against Illinois, the Frogs were forced to play without three of their top four players.

Freshman Tatum Nowlin took the place of senior Millie Nichols in doubles after Nichols suffered an injury the previous day.

“Millie finished her match [on Saturday], but after her match she felt that she broke her back or something,” Kadzhaya said.

Fotopoulos posted her first win at the No. 1 singles position with a 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 victory over Melissa Kopinski, notching TCU’s only point of the day. The Frogs ultimately fell 5-1 to Illinois.

Fortunately, the team has a few weeks to recuperate before they host their next matchup, which will be against Memphis on Feb. 16 at noon.
